On December 20, 1943, during WWII, a severely damaged US B-17 bomber, the "Ye Olde Pub," was unexpectedly escorted to safety by a German Luftwaffe ace, Franz Stigler, after a bombing run over Bremen. Stigler, despite having the opportunity to shoot down the crippled aircraft, chose not to, instead guiding it through enemy territory. This incredible act of chivalry, kept secret for decades, was only revealed years later when the two pilots reunited, forming a lasting friendship until their deaths in 2008.
