A new study reveals that the Dipteryx oleifera tree, native to Central America, not only survives lightning strikes but actually benefits from them. Lightning strikes eliminate competing vegetation and parasitic vines, giving the D. oleifera trees more sunlight and nutrients. This leads to a 14-fold increase in reproductive success. Researchers hypothesize that these trees may have evolved to attract lightning.
